Job Summary
GEP is seeking an experienced Product & Services Counsel to join our Legal team. Reporting to the Senior Director, Legal, the successful candidate will be a strategic advisor who will embed within GEP's Product and Engineering organizations and guide the legal, privacy, and AI dimensions of GEP's product roadmap. The successful candidate will act as the go-to legal partner for product teams from early design through launch, with particular focus on data privacy and AI. This role will also serve as the designated escalation point for the Global Contracts Team on AI schedules and AI related contract terms, ensuring consistency between what GEP's contracts promise and what its products actually do. The ideal candidate is a pragmatic, technically fluent attorney who can translate fast-moving product and engineering decisions into sound legal and compliance guidance. This is a great opportunity for a seasoned attorney to join a strong legal team in a dynamic role.
Requirements
- LL.B./LL.M. from a reputed law school; enrolled as an advocate with a State Bar Council in India.
- Minimum 5–7 years' experience, including at least 3 years as Product Counsel with a US- or EU-based software/SaaS company.
- Demonstrated product counseling experience, including (i) advising product teams on all related aspects including privacy, commercial, intellectual property, open source, and consumer protection issues; (ii) reviewing and drafting tech transaction documents; and (iii) assessing issues of first impression.
- Substantive experience advising on data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and comparable frameworks) in a product or technology context.
- Direct experience advising on AI/ML products or features, including familiarity with AI regulatory developments (EU AI Act, U.S. state AI laws) and their practical application.
- Experience reviewing or negotiating AI-related contract terms (data processing addenda, AI schedules, model usage rights) is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with procurement, supply chain, or enterprise B2B SaaS platforms is a plus.
- Strong business judgment and ability to translate complex legal and regulatory requirements into clear, actionable product guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Product/Services
- Serve as primary legal counsel to the Product and Engineering teams, embedding in planning, design, and sprint cycles to provide real-time legal input on new features and products.
- Advise on legal and compliance aspects of GEP's managed services and consulting offerings through use of AI and GEP Products, including service descriptions and client-facing service commitments.
- Review product features and releases across all legal topics - including data privacy, AI/ML functionality, intellectual property, consumer protection, and accessibility - before launch.
- Partner with Product Managers and Engineers to build legal and compliance review into the product development lifecycle, rather than as a late-stage gate.
- Translate legal and regulatory requirements into practical product requirements, working directly with engineers on implementation (e.g., consent flows, data retention controls, model logging, opt-outs).
- Build trusted, responsive working relationships with Product, Engineering, Design, and Security leadership.
- Deliver training and practical guidance to product and engineering teams on regulatory, legal and compliance related requirements within the Product.
- AI Governance & Privacy
- Review AI-powered features and functionality for legal and regulatory risk, including model training data sourcing, output accuracy and liability, bias and fairness testing, and transparency.
- Advise on responsible AI use and emerging regulation, including the EU AI Act, U.S. federal and state AI laws, and sector-specific requirements, as applied to GEP's products.
- Own privacy review of new products and features and advise on compliance with global data privacy laws as they apply to GEP's platform and AI capabilities.
- Maintain GEP's internal AI governance framework, risk-tiering methodology, and product review checklists, updating them as the regulatory landscape evolves.
- Contracts Escalation
- Serve as the legal escalation point for the Global Contracts Team on AI schedules and other AI-related contract provisions.
- Resolve non-standard AI schedule requests and negotiation escalations, ensuring contractual commitments accurately reflect current product and model capabilities.
- Maintain and update GEP's standard AI schedule, fallback positions, and playbook guidance in coordination with the Contracts Team and Product organization.
