Job Description
What you'll do
- Own features end-to-end. From initial design to production reliability — you write the code, manage the deployment, and own the 3 AM page. This includes React frontends, Java backends, and the cloud infrastructure tying them together.
- Build for scale and real-time. Design and implement systems that handle thousands of concurrent users on large-scale events, with low-latency WebSocket connections, efficient pub/sub patterns, and resilient backend services.
- Deliver high-quality frontend experiences. Build highly interactive React apps with video, live streaming, and real-time engagement — optimised for performance, bundle efficiency, and responsiveness.
- Work AI-assisted, not AI-dependent. Use tools like Cursor or Claude Code to accelerate routine work. Bring your senior judgment to audit what they produce — catching logic fragmentation, stale closures, misused concurrency primitives, and edge cases that agents confidently skip over.
- Shape architecture. Author Tech docs and architecture that drive how features get built — not just by you, but by the team and AI agents working alongside it. Enforce structural integrity across the codebase.
- Follow engineering best practices. Write clean, appropriately tested code — unit tests, meaningful PR reviews, and documentation that doesn't go stale.
- Collaborate closely. Work directly with designers and product managers to iterate fast. Be product-obsessed enough to push back on specs when something doesn't make sense for the customer.
What you bring
- 4-6 years of industry experience as a full-stack or specialised engineer with exposure to all layers of the stack.
- Deep expertise in at least one of React or Java (Spring Boot), and solid working knowledge of the other. You're a well-rounded full-stack engineer, not a specialist who ignores the other half.
- Frontend fundamentals — strong HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You understand how the browser works, not just how React works.
- Strong in system design — both high-level (distributed systems, partition tolerance, pub/sub) and low-level (database indexing, memory management, concurrency). You know the tradeoffs, not just the buzzwords.
- Relational database proficiency — comfortable with Postgres or MySQL: query design, indexing strategies, and knowing when an ORM is hiding something expensive from you.
- Hands-on AI tooling experience — you use tools like Cursor, Claude Code, or Copilot regularly. More importantly, you know their failure modes and apply judgment to what they produce.
- Modern stack familiarity — React, Redux, Java 11, Postgres, Redis. Comfortable with cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines.
