Smalltalk Application SME

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Smalltalk Application SME with 12+ years of IT experience and strong expertise in supporting, enhancing, and modernizing legacy Smalltalk-based applications within the Banking and Financial Services sector. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of Smalltalk technologies, banking operations, and enterprise application architecture while driving stability, performance optimization, and modernization initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise for Smalltalk-based banking applications.
• Analyze, maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance mission-critical legacy applications.
• Lead application modernization and transformation initiatives, including migration to modern technology stacks and cloud platforms.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand functional requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
• Perform root cause analysis and resolve complex production issues.
• Conduct impact assessments and support change management activities.
• Design and implement integrations between Smalltalk applications and modern enterprise systems via APIs, middleware, and messaging platforms.
• Ensure application performance, scalability, security, and reliability.
• Participate in architecture reviews and recommend improvements to reduce technical debt.
• Support regulatory compliance, risk management, and audit requirements within banking environments.
• Mentor development and support teams on Smalltalk best practices and architectural standards.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, application flows, and support procedures.

Required Technical Skills

Smalltalk Technologies

• Strong hands-on experience with one or more of: VisualWorks Smalltalk, Cincom Smalltalk, VA Smalltalk, GemStone/S, Pharo Smalltalk
• Strong Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) expertise.
• Design Patterns and Enterprise Application Architecture.
• Application Debugging and Performance Tuning.
• Legacy System Modernization Strategies.

Integration & Development Skills

• REST and SOAP Web Services
• API Integration
• Enterprise Middleware Platforms
• Messaging Technologies (JMS, MQ, Kafka preferred)
• SQL and Relational Databases (Oracle, SQL Server, DB2)
• Version Control Systems (Git, SVN)
• CI/CD and DevOps Practices

• 8+ years of hands-on Smalltalk development and support experience.
• Experience supporting mission-critical banking applications.
• Proven experience in legacy application modernization and system integration.
• Strong understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) and application support processes.
• Experience working in large-scale enterprise and banking environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
• Experience in Banking and Financial Services organizations.
• Architecture and modernization project experience.
• Cloud Certification (AWS/Azure/GCP) preferred.
• Agile/Scrum experience preferred.
