About the role
About the role:
In Samsara’s Business Technology Core IT team, we work to deliver awesome systems, support, and experiences that enable our teams to be as impactful as possible. As a member of the team, you’ll help own network technology and processes that enable our people to do their best work. We are responsible for identifying, designing, implementing, and supporting the applications and networks to create a streamlined experience for Samsarians. As a Network/Infrastructure Engineer on the team, you will work alongside our senior network engineers to help maintain, optimize, and troubleshoot our global on-premise network infrastructure, with a particular focus on our Cisco Meraki environment. This is a great opportunity for someone early to mid-career in network engineering to build hands-on expertise while learning from experienced mentors, all while helping ensure high availability and performance for a growing company. You will work closely with operations team members to operate, repair, and improve existing network infrastructure, including providing tier-1 and tier-2 support to other members of the Information Technology team and escalating more complex issues to senior engineers as needed.
In this role, you will:
- Configure, install, and maintain network hardware and software components, including Meraki switches, access points, and firewalls, under the guidance of senior network engineers.
- Perform hands-on troubleshooting and issue resolution for day-to-day network incidents, using the Meraki Dashboard, Wireshark, and packet captures to help identify root cause, escalating more complex issues to senior team members.
- Assist in developing and deploying network automation scripts and tools to enhance efficiency, partnering with senior engineers on more advanced automation projects.
- Support network maintenance activities including hardware and software upgrades, migrations, capacity upgrades, and decommissioning.
- Collaborate with other IT team members to integrate network systems with other applications and systems.
- Help build and maintain dashboards and reporting to monitor the health and performance of our network environments.
- Provide technical support and training to end-users as needed.
- Create and update documentation for network designs, best practices, and operational procedures.
- Support hardware lifecycle management, from procurement to decommissioning.
- Assist in system deployment and configuration for new projects or initiatives.
- Partner with vendors and service providers to help procure and maintain hardware and software.
- Participate in duty rotation of 7-day by 24-hour on-call support.
Minimum requirements for the role:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
- 1-3 years of hands-on experience in network engineering, IT infrastructure, or a related technical role, with exposure to Cisco Meraki hardware.
- Hands-on familiarity with the Cisco Meraki platform, including configuring VLANs, SSIDs and wireless settings, group policies, and site-to-site VPN (Auto VPN) across MX, MS, and MR devices.
- Solid understanding of the OSI model and core TCP/IP networking concepts, including routing and switching fundamentals, DHCP, DNS, and QoS/DSCP.
- Ability to troubleshoot common network issues using the Meraki dashboard, packet captures, and tools like Wireshark, digging in before escalating more complex problems to senior engineers.
- Exposure to network monitoring and diagnostic tools (e.g., SolarWinds, LogicMonitor, PRTG, ELK, Meraki dashboard alerts and reporting, or similar).
- Comfortable learning and applying SD-WAN specific features such as firewall and content filtering rules and adaptive policy, with eagerness to grow into more advanced protocols over time.
- Strong documentation habits, including experience creating and maintaining network diagrams using tools like Visio or Lucidchart or similar platforms documentation is a critical part of this role.
- Experience with IT asset and inventory management, tracking network hardware from procurement through deployment and decommissioning.
- Willingness to participate in a rotational on-call schedule, responding to production network incidents outside of standard business hours.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset, partnering with senior network engineers and cross-functional IT teams on incident tickets and SLA-based response and resolution.
An ideal candidate also has one or more:
- Early experience or strong interest in designing, deploying, and operating networks at scale.
- Familiarity with the Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence, OpsGenie, StatusPage).
- Familiarity with Splunk or similar log analysis tools.
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), or actively working toward it.
- Basic proficiency in API or other scripting/programming languages.
- Familiarity with Google Workspace and Google Cloud Platform.
- Exposure to cloud network management in AWS and/or GCP.
