About the role
Role Summary:
As a Transmission Line Engineer II/III, you will design the overhead high- and medium-voltage lines that connect utility-scale solar and battery storage projects to the grid. A gen-tie line is often the last link between a finished plant and the energy it delivers, and your work decides whether that link is safe, buildable, and cost-effective. You will turn project requirements into construction-ready designs, working alongside substation, protection and controls, and civil engineers on the High Voltage team. The work you produce will directly support the addition of utility-scale renewable energy generation assets to the power grid.
As an employee-owner, you will share in the results of the work and help build a team where every engineer's contribution is recognized. Candidates may be considered at either the Engineer II or Engineer III level depending on experience, technical depth, independence, and demonstrated ability to lead scope.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Across both levels, this role may include:
Core Technical & Functional Responsibilities
- Design overhead gen-tie, transmission, and medium-voltage lines in PLS-CADD, including route evaluation, plan and profile development, structure spotting, sag-tension analysis, conductor selection, and clearance verification.
- Model and check wood, steel, and concrete pole structures and lattice towers in PLS-POLE and PLS-TOWER under the governing load cases.
- Prepare structure load sheets and specifications for custom steel poles, and review fabricator drawings for conformance with the design.
- Develop insulator and hardware assemblies, framing details, and bills of material.
- Design or coordinate direct-embed and drilled pier foundations using geotechnical reports and foundation design software.
- Build terrain models and crossing data from LiDAR and survey files for use in line design.
- Produce development, permitting, and issued-for-construction drawing and specification packages.
- Contribute to substation steel structure, bus support, and general arrangement deliverables with the substation physical design team, where your experience allows.
- Adapt standard design methods to non-routine conditions such as road, rail, and line crossings, constrained right-of-way, and long spans, and bring unconventional problems to senior engineers for review.
Project & Portfolio Execution
- Lead small transmission line projects, or defined portions of larger ones, from kickoff through issued-for-construction.
- Manage assigned design scopes to schedule and budget, and report progress and risks to the project lead.
- Track RFIs, design changes, and scope changes, and update deliverables when project inputs change.
- Support construction by answering contractor questions, reviewing field changes, and preparing record drawings.
Quality, Standards & Compliance
- Ensure designs meet NESC, ASCE 74, ASCE 48, IEEE, and applicable utility and jurisdictional requirements.
- Follow Revamp QA/QC procedures, self-check models and calculations, and resolve review comments before issue.
- Document design criteria, assumptions, and load cases so reviewers and clients can verify the basis of design.
Collaboration & Communication
- Coordinate with substation physical, protection and controls, and civil engineers on line terminations, dead-end structures, and access roads.
- Work with surveyors, geotechnical consultants, and right-of-way teams to resolve alignment and structure placement conflicts.
- Attend project meetings and present line design progress, open issues, and recommendations.
Additional Expectations at the Engineer III Level
- Lead multiple transmission line projects at once, preparing and owning scope, schedule, and budget.
- Select design criteria and solve complex design problems independently, seeking guidance only on unconventional conditions.
- Support client interaction for multiple projects in a portfolio, including design reviews and technical clarifications.
- Develop work plans and assign tasks to discipline team members.
- Mentor Engineer I and II staff and review their models, calculations, and drawings.
- Act as Engineer of Record on line design packages when licensed and assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
- Perform essential duties including meeting deliverables and deadlines.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned or directed.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.
- Overhead transmission or distribution line design experience: typically 2+ years for Engineer II and 5+ years for Engineer III.
- Working proficiency in PLS-CADD, including sag-tension analysis, structure spotting, and clearance checks.
- Experience modeling structures in PLS-POLE or PLS-TOWER.
- Working knowledge of NESC, ASCE 74, and ASCE 48 as they apply to overhead line design.
- Experience preparing plan and profile drawings, structure load sheets, and material lists.
- Clear written and verbal communication, including documenting calculations for review.
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience designing gen-tie lines for utility-scale solar, storage, or other generation interconnections.
- Foundation design experience with PLS-CAISSON or MFAD.
- Experience processing LiDAR data for line design.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or MicroStation.
- Substation physical or substation steel design experience (steel structures, bus supports, general arrangements), or exposure to underground transmission design.
Benefits for Full-Time Positions:
- Participation in Revamp's Employee Ownership ESOP program.
- Competitive compensation with bonus.
- Full benefits package offerings including 99% employer-paid health, vision, life, and dental insurance.
- Medical, dependent care, and commuter FSA.
- Monthly health and wellness stipend.
- Attractive vacation, sick, and holiday pay.
- Paid parental leave.
- 401(k) savings plan with 100% match up to 6%, vested immediately.
- Paid volunteer time off and charitable donation matching.
