Staff Software Engineer

project44 is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our engineering team. You will work in a fast-paced Agile environment owning technical solutions for broad and complex integration challenges, helping accelerate how project44 connects to the world's logistics networks. This role carries deeper technical ownership and cross-team influence than our Senior Software Engineer track, and is expected to shape strategy for their team's systems while mentoring engineers beyond their immediate team.

Key accountabilities: What you'll work on

• Own the design and technical direction for state-of-the-art integrations that expand our ever-growing network of connected carriers and customers, applying insightful and strategic approaches to broad or ambiguous requirements.
• Manage integrations through their full life cycle, and drive how your team monitors, operates, and improves the supply chain visibility platform it owns.
• Own data-consistency and change-propagation guarantees for shared master data, including event-driven changelog/CDC pipelines that fan out to a wide set of downstream consumers.
• Design resilient integrations with external, non-p44 API providers — handling rate limits, retries, and circuit-breaking for third-party and regulatory data sources.
• Build systems in a multi-cloud environment (we use AWS and GCP; experience with other clouds such as Azure is valued).
• Initiate and facilitate discussions with cross-functional partners on complex technical problems, communicate standards, and get buy-in on solutions.
• Partner with business stakeholders to align requirements, and proactively identify solutions to issues affecting your team and adjacent teams.
• Share ownership of all facets of software delivery — development, operations, and test — and set the standard for code quality and maintainability on your team.
• Assume on-call responsibilities for systems built and owned by your team, and lead investment in tools, monitoring, and automation to improve the on-call experience for the whole team.
• Mentor engineers on your team and across other teams, both technically and culturally, and act as an emerging leader and role model.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to spec out high-level design for large projects from a PRD, and occasionally contribute to org-wide engineering strategy.

Qualifications:

• 9+ years professional experience building large-scale, real-time or near-real-time cloud systems.
• Strong programming and debugging skills, with deep proficiency in Java.
• Demonstrated experience owning technical solutions end-to-end and leading their execution across a team.

Experience in:

• Building systems in a multi-cloud environment. We use AWS & GCP but value experience in other cloud environments such as Azure.
• Creating and working with scalable Java-based micro-services, including architecture-level decisions that affect multiple teams.
• Working with databases (preferably Postgres or other SQL-based DB) as well as document stores such as MongoDB.
• Event stores and stream-processing in Kafka or Kinesis, including change-data-capture / changelog publishing patterns.
• Working in an agile software development environment, including leading initiatives and meetings within a team or functional area.
• Mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction beyond your immediate team.

Desirable and helpful (but not necessary):

• Experience investigating large and complex codebases across service boundaries.
• Creating APIs/web services: REST, OpenAPI/Swagger.
• Container orchestration: Docker & Kubernetes.
• Hands-on experience with DynamoDB, MongoDB, Postgres.
• Experience applying or refining a team's security strategy.
• A track record of garnering resources and motivating teammates toward a common goal.
• Personal drive and a high pace, with intentionality about the projects and roles you take on.
