Member of Technical Staff – Automation Engineer

Role Summary:

Build automation that helps athenahealth deliver reliable, high-quality software at scale. The Member of Technical Staff – Automation Engineer will develop and maintain automated test coverage across UI, API, and backend layers, and will use Claude and Codex agents and skills to help solve testing problems such as test generation, test data creation, and failure triage. This role is based in Chennai, India and follows a hybrid work model. The person in this role will collaborate with engineers, QA partners, and other stakeholders to deliver maintainable automation solutions using modern software development and AI-assisted testing practices. This position reports to the Senior Engineering Manager, Quality.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

• Develop automated tests using Playwright with TypeScript to support business-critical workflows and platform capabilities.
• Build and maintain API automation (REST/GraphQL) and backend test automation that integrate with internal platforms and dependent systems.
• Use Claude and Codex agents and skills to help solve testing problems, such as generating test cases, creating test data, and triaging test failures.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to translate quality requirements into automated test coverage.
• Create and enhance automated tests and CI/CD test integrations that support high-volume transactional workflows.
• Troubleshoot automation and pipeline issues, identify root causes of flaky tests and failing API contracts, and deliver fixes that improve stability.
• Contribute to code reviews, test reviews, and team engineering practices that improve automation quality and consistency.
• Support optimization of test execution performance and pipeline throughput to improve operational efficiency.
• Use AI tools, where appropriate, to improve productivity in day-to-day automation work, such as understanding unfamiliar code, drafting test cases, summarizing technical information, or exploring implementation options, while reviewing outputs carefully before applying them.
