About the Role:
Apex is seeking an Environmental Scientist – Project Scientist to join our team in Iselin, NJ. This is a great opportunity for an environmental professional who enjoys hands-on fieldwork, wants exposure to a variety of environmental projects, and is looking for a clear path to grow.
This position will support projects throughout New Jersey and New York, including Long Island and the New York City boroughs. The role is approximately 80% field / 20% office and will involve visiting a variety of project sites to perform environmental sampling, inspections, oversight, and data collection.
Your Responsibilities as an Environmental Scientist – Project Scientist:
- Conduct environmental field sampling and data collection, including soil, groundwater, and vapor intrusion sampling.
- Perform environmental due diligence activities, including Phase I inspections and reporting.
- Support Phase II investigations, remediation activities, and environmental reporting.
- Perform operation and maintenance activities, including oversight of sub-slab vapor mitigation systems.
- Conduct and oversee stormwater-related work, including subcontractor oversight and documentation.
- Provide field oversight during remediation and other environmental construction activities.
- Oversee subcontractor activities, including monitoring well installations, remediation activities, UST removals, and other field procedures.
- Maintain accurate field notes and generate environmental data of known and appropriate quality.
- Prepare technical reports, field documentation, and other project deliverables.
- Assist with basic proposal preparation.
- Communicate effectively with project managers, clients, subcontractors, and other project team members.
- Complete assigned tasks accurately, safely, on schedule, and within established project budgets.
- Travel to project sites throughout NJ and NY, with limited overnight travel as project needs require.
- Develop proficiency across a variety of environmental project types and procedures.
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience with environmental field sampling and data collection.
- Experience working with applicable NJDEP and NYSDEC regulations.
- Demonstrated proficiency with environmental field procedures.
- Strong technical writing, communication, and organizational skills.
- Experience with data management and environmental report preparation.
- Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Strong safety awareness and a demonstrated understanding of safe work practices.
- Ability and willingness to learn and become proficient across a wide variety of project types.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to complete work in a timely manner and within project budgets and schedules.
- Valid driver's license, good driving history, and reliable transportation are required, as the position requires driving a personal vehicle to project sites.
- Ability to travel and stay overnight occasionally for field assignments.
- 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is preferred.
- Light construction experience or hands-on field skills.
- Experience with remediation oversight, stormwater work, or subcontractor oversight.
